    Abstract: The Howard T. Livingston papers (SAFR 233, HDC 472) are comprised of typed and handwritten correspondence and narratives, sketches, copies of articles, including "Coastwise on the CORONA" published in the Sealetter, May 1965. For the manuscript of this article and additional correspondence with the San Francisco Maritime Museum, see HDC 900 SAFR 8885. Livingston's writings feature maritime experiences from his youth dating around the turn of the previous century. The collection is also rich in descriptions of his employment at the Fulton Iron Works, the San Pedro waterfront scene and the construction of the north beach of the Marina district in San Francisco. The collection is available for research use without restriction.

    In 1988, San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park acquired this collection from Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

    Historical or Biographical Note

    In a letter to the Gentlemen at the San Francisco Maritime Museum dated March 15 1965, Livingston provided the following biography:
    Born in San Francisco, on Shotwell Street near 16th, October 17, 1889.
    Resided in San Francisco, in Cow Hollow until 1901; in San Pedro, 1901-1905; back to Cow Hollow until 1914; in Berkeley until 1917; in San Francisco until 1926; in Los Angeles until 1960; in Portland to date (1965).
    Attended Sherman and Pacific Heights schools in San Francisco; San Pedro grammar and high schools in San Pedro; Washington Evening and Lowell High Schools in San Francisco; and the University of California, Berkeley, course in mechanical engineering, class of 1915.
    Employed at various times by the Fulton Iron Works, Moore and Scott Shipyard; Mare Island Navy Yard, Los Angeles Shipbuilding and Drydock Corporation; in power plants of the United Railroads, Northern California Power company, Sierra and San Francisco Power company, and Pacific Gas and Electric Company; Caterpillar Tractor Company, Southern California Edison Company, General Petroleum Corporation and the Department of Water and Power of the City of Los Angeles, and the Los Angeles County Engineering Department.
    Retired October 30, 1959.
    September 22, 1917 to January 24 1919, in the U.S. Army Engineers, first in the 316th and last in the 220th, rank for the last five months: second lieutenant -From HDC 900 SAFR 8885
    According to records at Ancestry.com, Livingston died on December 15, 1973 in Oregon. He is buried at Fairhaven Memorial Park in Santa Ana, Orange County, California.
    Earlier cataloging information noted that the Livingston's moved to the Cow Hollow neighborhood in San Francisco in 1893. His father worked for Warren and Malley who were hired to cut the sand dunes and fill in the north beach area now known as the Marina district.
