Series 1: Chronological 1944-2005

Scope and Content

This series consists primarily of correspondence and press items relating to Stalvey's work in three fields: concert production, composition, and education. Personal correspondence includes letters from Stalvey's first wife, Marilyn Stalvey (Igor Stravinsky's secretary in the 1960s), and correspondence with fellow composers as well as rental agreements from the architect Dion Neutra, Stalvey's longtime landlord. Many years include letters of award or rejection from various foundations. Stalvey’s move to Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) with Monday Evening Concerts (MEC) created friction between him and the MEC board, which is documented in correspondence and press. Of particular interest are letters from the composer and pedagogue Nadia Boulanger, composers Ernst Krenek and Conlon Nancarrow, and philanthropist and new music supporter Betty Freeman.

Organization and Arrangement

The chronological series maintains original order.

Series 4: Composition 1953-2005

Scope and Content

This series includes Stalvey’s sketches and maps for works in progress, notes on errata for scores and recordings, and scores and instructions for the large multimedia pieces he made in the early 1970s. His compositions are in various media and forms: chamber, solo, vocal, orchestral, electronic, music-theater, multi-media, and dance, with performances of his works in over 20 countries. He was working on his first opera, Kursk, when he passed away and, although unfinished, there are plans for the performance.
Many of the scores have corresponding materials in the Media series, which may consist of archival performance recordings, tape parts for electroacoustic pieces, source material, interviews about the work, or wholly electronic works.
Contents of the score files vary; they may include pencil manuscripts, copyist vellum manuscripts, sketches, bound or printed scores, bound or printed parts, partial scores, drafts, and notes on the pieces.

Organization and Arrangement

The composition series is in chronological order in Box 13-18. Box 12 has its own chronological order.
