    Biography

    The Art Directors Guild local 800 is part of the International Alliance of Theatrical and Stage Employees (IATSE). The Guild began in 1924 when a group of working art directors formed the Cinemagundi Club as a social forum. In 1937, the Club became the Society of Motion Picture Art Directors. In 2000, the Society became the Art Directors Guild. The Guild includes art directors, scenic, title and graphic artists, illustrators and matte artists and set designers and model makers.

    Collection Scope and Content Summary

    The Art Directors Guild collection span the years 1918-2005 and contains 25 linear feet of manuscript material. The collection consists of scripts and storyboards [reproductions] from produced and unproduced production files as well as television files. Some notable titles include THE FORTUNE COOKIE (1966), NORTH BY NORTHWEST (1959), THE ROBE (1953), RUSSIANS ARE COMING THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING (1966), THE TAIL OF A CAT (1918), and TERMS OF ENDEARMENT (1983). The subject files consist of books and periodicals related to production design and art direction, as well as correspondence, programs, and screening invitations.
    The manuscript material also consists of smaller collection series of art directors and production designers' personal papers and work. The Gene Allen collection series consists of scripts, clippings, research and story notes for produced and unproduced productions including LET'S MAKE LOVE (1960) and SOMETHING'S GOT TO GIVE (1962). Allen's materials also consist of research and notes for courses taught at UCLA and an unpublished book titled "The Movie Sketch."
    The Hilyard Brown collection series features scripts and storyboards [reproductions] of produced films including THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (1955), SKULLDUGGERY (1970), and VON RYAN'S EXPRESS (1965). The subject files sub-series contains material on the 36th and 48th Academy Awards ceremonies.
    The Brian Eatwell collection consists of miscellaneous research and production materials for an unproduced project THE FOURTH MAN.
    The Ernst Fegte collection includes subject files regarding filmography and notes.
    The Anton Grot collection features photographs and production art [reproductions] from various produced productions including A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM (1935), THE PRIVATE LIVES OF ELIZABETH AND ESSEX (1939), and RHAPSODY IN BLUE (1945). The sub-series subject files contains articles and photographs.
    The David Hall collection consists of scripts, clippings, wardrobe breakdowns, and reproduced production art from THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD (1965), as well as reproduced storyboards for LADIES IN RETIREMENT (1941).
    The Fred Harpman collection of production files and television files consists of scripts, breakdowns, clippings, budget and costs, production art [reproductions], shooting schedules and cast and crew contacts. Notable titles include AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS (1956), THE BOSTON STRANGLER (1968), CHE! (1969), DELIVERANCE (1972), FANTASTIC VOYAGE (1966), MYRA BRECKINRIDGE (1970), RICH AND FAMOUS (1981), and DARK SHADOWS (TV, 1991).
    The Maurice Zuberano collection contains production files, television files, and subject files of reproduced storyboards and production art. Some notable titles include STAR TREK - THE MOTION PICTURE (1979), THE SOUND OF MUSIC (1965), and WEST SIDE STORY (1961).
    The Art Directors Guild collection also includes one scrapbook by Frank Hotaling featuring research, photographs, and clippings for THE SEARCHERS (1956).
    The oversize files consist of clippings, research, a certificate for the Scenic Title and Artists, and a pressbook for Twentieth Century-Fox in the years 1976, 1977 and 1978.
    The Production Art sub-series of the Art Directors Guild collection spans the years 1937-2000 and includes more than 1,300 drawings. The collection documents the work of art directors such as Albert Brenner, Hilyard Brown, Edward Carfagno, Richard Day, David Hall, William A. Hornung, Van Nest Polglase, and Jack Martin Smith. Titles include: "Ben Hur" (1959), "Citizen Kane" (1941), "Coma" (1978), "Dick Tracy" (1990), "Heidi" (1937), "Mommie Dearest" (1981), and "The Night of the Hunter" (1955).
    Also included in the Production Art sub-series are more than sixty costume design drawings spanning the years 1935-1961 (bulk 1947-1955). Titles include "Lottery Lover" (1935), "Forever Amber" (1947), and "Desiree" (1954).
