Biographical / Historical

Dr. Carlson R. Chambliss was born in 1942 in Boston. He received an A.B. degree from Harvard University in 1962, and a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1968. Chambliss is professor emeritus of astronomy at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania. Dr. Chambliss is also an active philatelist and over the years has formed a large holding of stamps and postal material of the Vatican City State.

Arrangement

Items are arranged into two different series separated by item type: Postage Stamps and Postal Stationary. Postal Stationary is further broken into two subseries: Aerogrammes and Postcards.

This collection consists of postal material issued in Vatican City, including stamps, aerogrammes, and postcards.

Box 1-2

Series 1: Postage Stamps 1929-2005

Arrangement

Stamps are arranged primarily by date issued and secondarily by denomination, both in ascending order.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of two volumes. The first is a stamp album that spans the years 1929 to 1985, found in Box 1. The second has been transferred from its stockbook to protective sheets, covering the years 1985 to 2005, found in Box 2. Included is a provisional surcharge set from 1934. Both albums feature typed information regarding the history of the Vatican postal system and the stamps themselves provided by Chambliss.

Scope and Contents

This series contains Vatican postal stationary items, including Vatican commemorative aerogrammes mostly with first day cancels,Vatican paid-reply cards, postcard sets of architecture and fountain of the Vatican City, maximum cards and postcard sets issued by the Vatican featuring artwork, archives, saints, and popes.
