Biography/Administrative History
The California Northwestern Railway was incorporated on March 17, 1898. When the CNW became part of the Northwestern Pacific
Railroad Company (effective January 8, 1907), the company owned 39.91 miles of a single track railroad extending north from
Ukiah to Sherwood. It also operated 165 miles of road owned by the San Francisco and North Pacific Railway Company, extending
from Tiburon to Ukiah with branches.
Scope and Content of Collection
This collection includes financial statements and general manager's orders, including information about construction projects,
betterments, earnings, expenses and payroll. The Statement of Accounts consist of several forms bound together, including
monthly summaries of: Income and expenditures; Trial balance; General balance sheet; Expenditures account - Additions; Expenditures
Account - Betterments; Details of betterments; Extraordinary expenses included in operating expenses; Earnings and expenses;
Passenger statistics; Freight forwarded at stations; Freight received from stations;Classification of freight; Statement of
material and fuel; Force report; Exhibit of operations. Form 351, Requisition for Construction and Repair Work and General
Manager's Orders, documents requests for work done to specific locomotives, rolling stock and boats.
