Biographical / Historical

Dimitri Tiomkin (1894-1979) was a Russian born American film composer best known for his scores for western films. Tiomkin received 22 Academy Award nominations and won four Oscars: Best Original Score for High Noon (1952), The High and the Mighty (1954), and The Old Man and the Sea (1958); and Best Original Song for The Ballad of High Noon.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains the papers and film scores of composer Dimitri Tiomkin (1894-1979). Materials include personal papers, screenplays, photographs, correspondence, phonograph records, click tracks, and scores for most of Tiomkin's major films including Lost Horizon (1937), Moon and Sixpence (1942), It's a Wonderful Life (1946), High Noon (1952), High and the Mighty (1954), Friendly Persuasion (1956), and 55 Days at Peking (1963). Among the screenplays are Red Strange Lady in Town (1961) and The Guns of Navarone (1961). Scrapbooks dating from the late 1920s cover Tiomkin's career as a concert pianist and film composer. There are also musical scores from Frank Capra's Why We Fight series.
