Biography/Administrative History

Cosmas Damian Damm was born in Bavaria, emigrated to California and was naturalized in San Francisco in 1867. He worked as an upholsterer in San Francisco and in Sacramento, and died in 1879. Jacob Breiling, also born in Bavaria, came to San Francisco and operated a meat market with his brother John; Jacob died here in 1878. Breiling’s parcel was later owned by Rosalie Morris, and the 1888 dwelling on it is numbered 2142-2144 Bush Street (2018).

Scope and Content of Collection

Indenture made March 1, 1872 between Cosmas Damm, grantor, and Jacob Breiling, grantee, to parcel in block 312, Western Addition. Bennett may have donated the document to the de Young Museum in 1940.
