Historical or Biographical Note
The Frances Depau was built at New York by Brown and Bell in 1833. She was a 595-ton packet ship 133 feet long, with a 31.5-foot
beam, and a 15.8-foot depth of hold. Frances Depau sailed in the transatlantic packet service between New York and Havre from
1833-1836. Her career was distinguished by a westbound passage of 79 days, one of the slowest on record.
In 1836, she suffered an accident at Havre, was condemned, and sold as sailing "tramp." She was employed in the 1840s intermittently
as a coastal packet carrying New York trade goods and passengers to New Orleans in exchange for cotton and other Southern
commodities. She participated in 1849 California Gold Rush, by sailing to San Francisco.
