Description
The collection consists of 4 boxes containing sketchbooks filled with drawings and sketches by UCSB Art Studio professor, Robert Thomas (1924-1987).
Background
Robert Thomas was born on April 19, 1924, in Wichita, Kansas, and died on October 16, 1987, in Santa Barbara, California. After serving in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1943 to 1946, he studied sculpture in Paris with Ossip Zadkine. He then went on to receive his B.A. from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1951, and an M.F.A. from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland in 1952. In 1954 he started his teaching career as an instructor in art at UCSB.
