Administrative History
The Mountains AIDS Foundation was founded in 1994 by Phyllis Shankman and based in Santa Monica, California. The primary feature
of the nonprofit was the Sacred Mountain Retreat Program at Zaca Lake, north of Santa Barbara, consisting of a five day, four
night, non-sectarian, spiritually-oriented program for people living with HIV/AIDS. Offered 5 to 6 times a year, the retreats
were designed to offer participants an opportunity to address their feelings of fear and confusion, and explore their capacity
for healing, self-acceptance, self-care, and living more successfully with HIV/AIDS. The nonprofit was dissolved in 2002 and
operation of the Sacred Mountain Retreat Program taken over by Growing Edge.
