Abstract: John Strebel postcards, records and other material (SAFR 23863, HDC 1678) document a portion of Strebel's career as a German American seagoing baker. The collection includes a photocopy of four Company Muster Roll entries for Strebel from the 35th Regiment of the United States Volunteer Infantry dating from 1899 to 1901; a United States of America Citizen Seaman's Identification Card dated 6 November 1918; a Pacific Steamship Company Bonus Service Record, 1923 to 1930. For four of the five vessels listed on this card, there is a postcard depicting the vessel namely the ADMIRAL FARRAGUT, the ADMIRAL SCHLEY, the ADMIRAL PEOPLES and the ADMIRAL FISKE. There are four additional postcards: the US Transport SHERMAN, the ADMIRAL DEWEY, the DOROTHY ALEXANDER and the SS MONTEREY. The last item is from the Department of Commerce, Steamboat Inspection Service, titled Pilot Rules for Certain Inland Waters of the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts and of the Coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The Rules are dated 24 June 1930. The collection is available for research use without restriction.

Historical or Biographical Note

John Strebel served in the 35th Regiment of the United States Volunteer Infantry from 1899 to 1901. From 1923 to 1930, he worked for the Pacific Steamship Company.
