Materials include master contract files between Local 3 and employers of represented staff; grievances; organizational records, including executive and administrative files; and campaigns to unionize workplaces (such as the University of the Pacific) or to resolve disputes (such as the files relating to arbitration after mass layoffs at Blue Shield). This collection also includes newsletters, photographs, and t-shirts.

Organizational History

The Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) was chartered in 1945 under the name Office Employees International Union. Today, OPEIU represents over 100,000 workers in health care, social service, insurance, and office settings across the United States with the goal of advancing and strengthening the members' economic, social, and professional interests. Local 3 is a now-defunct chapter based in San Francisco which represented about 1,500 members at its height. In 2016, members voted to merge Local 3 with Local 29 (based in Oakland, Calif.). As of 2022, Local 29 represents over 6,000 Bay Area employees at more than 300 locations, with many workers employed by Kaiser Permanente.
