Biographical / Historical
Daniel Owen Stolpe was born in 1939 in Los Angeles, California. Stolpe attended the Los
Angeles County Art Institute (OTIS) until 1962, then apprenticed with artists Don La Viere
Turner and Joe Funk. Commissioned by the Smithsonian Institute in the late 1960s, he moved
to Washington, D.C. to illustrate extinct birds for their magazine and for the Atlantic
Monthly. In 1970, Stolpe moved to Santa Cruz, California, where he established Native Images
Studios with Joe Funk and taught printmaking at UC Santa Cruz. Stolpe produced work in a
variety of mediums, including monotypes, paintings, woodcuts, lithographs, etchings, and
serigraphs. Stolpe passed away on December 12, 2018.
