Commissioned by the Smithsonian Institute in the late 1960s, he moved to Washington, D.C. to illustrate extinct birds for their magazine and for the Atlantic Monthly. In 1970, Stolpe moved to Santa Cruz, California, where he established Native Images Studios with Joe Funk and taught printmaking at UC Santa Cruz. Stolpe produced work in a variety of mediums, including monotypes, paintings, woodcuts, lithographs, etchings, and serigraphs. Stolpe passed away on December 12, 2018.
