Administrative/Biographical History
Charles Wagenheim was born February 21, 1896 in Newark, New Jersey. He graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts
in New York in 1923. During his acting career he was involved in numerous Broadway, television, and motion pictures projects.
Among his many television series credits are Bonanza, The big valley, The Doris Day show, Gunsmoke, and Wild wild West among
others. He also appeared in numerous made for TV movies including, Frankenstein, part of Wide World Mysteries anthologies
and McNaughton's daughter, among others. His motion picture credits include Samson and Delilah, A streetcar named Desire,
The diary of Anne Frank, Hail Hero!, and The baby maker, among others. Wagenheim died March 6, 1979 in West Hollywood, California
as a result of foul play.
Collection consists of script material related to the acting career of Charles Wagenheim. Included are scripts for a variety
of television and motion picture projects produced between the 1950s and 1970s. The bulk of the collection includes over thirty
scripts for the television series Gunsmoke in which Wagenheim had a recurring role as the character Halligan from 1967-1975.
Additional television series scripts include writings for Bonanza, The big valley, The Doris Day show, The lawless years show,
The life and legend of Wyatt Earp, This is the life and Wild wild West, among other programs. The made-for-TV movies include
script material for Frankenstein (part of Wide World Mysteries anthologies), End of the line (released as A cry for help),
and McNaughton's daughter, among other projects. Notably absent from the collection are scripts representing his stage work
and his motion picture related work, except for films The baby maker and Hail hero. Additionally, there is a very small amount
of production information found within selected scripts.
