Abstract: Dr. Paul Pierson (b. February 13, 1927 in Los Angeles, CA) is an American theologian; former Dean of Fuller Seminary’s School
of World Mission (1980-1992); and associate provost (1992-1993). He specialized as the Professor of History of Mission and
Latin American Studies from 1992-1997, and as a participating faculty member from 1980-2018. The collection included a selection
of his class materials, writings, and research material. Many student papers, submitted to Dr. Pierson during his professorship,
are included. Dr. Pierson’s areas of expertise include evangelical church in Latin America, history of the Christian missionary
movement, history of evangelical awakenings, and new patterns in mission.

Biography/Administrative History
Dr. Paul Pierson (b. February 13, 1927 in Los Angeles, CA) is an American theologian; former Dean of Fuller Seminary’s School
of World Mission (1980-1992); and associate provost (1992-1993). He specialized as the Professor of History of Mission and
Latin American Studies from 1992-1997, and as a participating faculty member from 1980-2018. Dr. Pierson contributed as a
teaching professor in the SIS Korean studies program, the History of Mission concentration, and the Perspectives on World
Mission courses. Dr. Pierson was a missionary with the Presbyterian Church, living in Brazil (1955-1970) and Portugal (1970-1973).
Upon returning to the United States, Pierson pastored First Presbyterian Church of Fresno, California from 1973 to 1980. He
has since served as interim pastor for three Los Angeles area churches, including the First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood.
Dr. Pierson is chair of the board of the Latin American Mission and also of the Overseas Crusades, and participated on the
boards of World Impact, Air Serve, Christ for the City, and other mission organizations.
