Positive Image: A Portrait of Gay America Series 1983-1985

Scope and Contents

The series includes a copy of Stewart's book once owned by Chuck Rowland, autographed by Stewart and his editor, Thomas J. Watson. The book also contains the autographs of some of the subjects of his work, including Glen Scott, Jim Kepner, Ivy Bottini, Morris Kight, Harry Hay, Dottie Wine, and David Kopay. An introduction to the planned work from 1983 and a collection inventory of the images complete the series.

People Series 1982-1984

Scope and contents

The series consists of Stewart's black and white photographs of gays and lesbians from across the United States, who have made a positive contribution to their communities. The bulk of the images are published and unpublished portraits from Stewart's book, Positive Image: A Portrait of Gay America, along with additional Stewart portraits.

Arrangement

The photographs of people are arranged alphabetically by the subject's last name.

Scope and contents

The series consists of Stewart's published and unpublished black and white photographs documenting places, events, and symbols of the United States LGBT movement. He traveled the United States from 1982 to 1984, photographing iconic places and events for his work, Positive Image: A Portrait of Gay America.
