Series 1:   Pepsodent and Lever Brothers Subject Files. 1938-1950

Physical Description: 7 archival document boxes.

Scope and Content Note

Charles Luckman's career at Pepsodent and Lever Brothers is documented in this series, which contains subject files organized to cover both his professional and personal activities. The creation of a master index for these files, most likely in 1950 (see Box 1, Folder 20), demonstrates that Luckman considered them an important resource for his work. In short, they were his personal resource files.
The inclusive dates of this series are 1938-1950. These subject files contain extensive correspondence between Luckman and Albert D. Lasker and Henry Sell concerning advertising. The latter two persons were important figures in American advertising. Thus this correspondence testifies first hand to the practice of advertising in American business in the 1940s. Other correspondence and materials such as company reports and organizational charts also provide a close look at the workings of major American corporations, eg, Pepsodent and Lever Brothers. Names of note in this series include Clare Booth, Bob Hope, Francis Countway, and Abe Fortas.

Series 6:   Los Angeles Public Library. 1974-1980

Physical Description: 9 archival document boxes.

Scope and Content Note

In 1975, Charles Luckman Associates won a contract from the Los Angeles City Council to study the feasibility of replacing the Los Angeles Central Public Library with a new library. This Luckman Associates did in 1976, offering three possible sites for a new library. The proposal was controversial and never realized. This series documents extensively Luckman's work on this project and the controversies surrounding it, including a lawsuit by Luckman for libel. Dating from 1974 through 1980, this series' materials consist of Los Angeles City memoranda and reports (mostly copies), legal documents, newspaper articles, reports, feasibility studies, and correspondence.

Physical Description: 6 archival document boxes.

Scope and Content Note

Charles Luckman's autobiography, Twice in a Lifetime. From Soap to Skyscrapers, was published in 1988. This series consists of the subject files used as the source for the autobiography. The subject material ranges in date from 1925 through 1986, with notes on his life beginning for the year 1941. Not coincidentally Luckman's autobiography concentrates on these years of his life, making this series a rich source for documenting the architectural activities of Luckman as well as his years at Pepsodent and Lever Brothers. Materials consist of newspaper and magazine articles, a rough draft of the autobiography, research notes, and chronologies.

Scope and Content Note

The largest series in the collection, this series contains copies, both partial and whole, of speeches by Charles Luckman; newspaper and magazine articles concerning his speeches; and resource materials. The arrangement of the speeches suggests that Luckman had them organized into subject files, at different stages of his career. He certainly kept track of them; see Box 1, Folder 23. The titles of the speeches, taken from folder titles, are provided, as are the location of the speech, if this information was available from the folder title.
Confirmed dates of the speeches run from 1946 to 1990. Those from early in his career reflect Luckman's generally progressive approach to labor/management relations and addressed the concerns of post-World War II America. Luckman's speeches also reflect his general business and architectural philosophy, providing insights into these areas in post-World War II America. Of interest are his speeches against the New Left of campus unrest in the 1960s that he made while on the Board of Trustees of the California State system; see, for example, Box 9, folder 14, and Box 11, Folder 8. Box 21, Folder 5 contains a speech by William Pereira.

Series 14:   Citizens Food Committee. 1947-1949

Physical Description: 1 archival document box, 2 oversize boxes.

Scope and Content Note

At the request of President Harry S. Truman in 1947, Charles Luckman served as chair of the twenty-six member "Citizens' Food Committee," whose charge was to devise strategies to save American grain for shipment to a war-desolated Europe short on foodstuffs. Ineffectual in its effort to develop voluntary rationing in the United States, the committee only lasted two months, but it was the forerunner of Truman's great foreign policy achievement, the Marshall Plan. This series contains some Charles Luckman correspondence concerning his work as chair; other materials include committee budgets, the final report of the committee, photographs, and newspaper articles. All materials date from 1947 through 1949.

Series 15:   Prudential Center. 1957-1968

Physical Description: 3 archival document boxes, 1 oversize folder.

Scope and Content Note

The Prudential Center is a group of buildings in downtown Boston that serves as an entertainment and business center; the project was intended to help revitalize Boston's downtown. Groundbreaking for the project occurred in 1959 and the grand opening was in 1965. Charles Luckman Associates designed the Center's showpiece, the Prudential Center, as well as other important buildings, such as the New England Merchants Bank Building and the Sheraton Boston Hotel.
This series contains memoranda, press releases, incoming and outgoing (usually copies) correspondence, telefaxes, meeting minutes, progress reports, photographs of architectural drawings, and architectural drawings. The series contains much information on costs, design problems, and relations between Prudential and Luckman Associates. Much of it is copies, filed for recordkeeping purposes, most likely for Charles Luckman's own personal use.
The original folder titles are noted at the beginning of the description of the folder contents, followed by a summary of the contents. If there was no folder title, this is noted in the description field.
