Description
The Paul Chalfin drawing of the James Deering residence Villa Vizcaya consists of one reprographic copy of a bird’s eye perspective
of the Miami mansion Villa Vizcaya. It is undated, but probably dates circa 1914 to circa 1923.
Background
Paul Chalfin, born 1874, studied for two years at Harvard University. He left Harvard to pursue a career as an artist and
was accepted at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1898, where he studied painting with Jean-Leon Gerome. Chalfin’s best
known work is the Villa Vizcaya, a mansion in Miami, Florida, for which he was responsible for the design, decoration, and
furnishing of the main house and garden. Chalfin died in 1959.
