    Biography

    Millard Kaufman was a screenwriter and novelist active in film from the 1950s through mid-1970s. He was nominated for Academy Awards for his screenplays for TAKE THE HIGH GROUND (1953) and BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK (1955).

    Collection Scope and Content Summary

    The Millard Kaufman papers span the years 1941-1998 (bulk 1950s-1960s) and encompass 8.3 linear feet. The collection consists of script material for more than a dozen films. BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK, RAINTREE COUNTY (1957), TAKE THE HIGH GROUND, and THE WAR LORD (1965) are well represented. There is script material for a dozen unproduced properties, notably for THE CHANCELLOR MANUSCRIPT, based on the novel by Robert Ludlum. For television there are teleplays for ENOLA GAY: THE MEN, THE MISSION, THE ATOMIC BOMB (1980), THE NATIVITY (1978), and POLICE STORY (1976), as well as teleplays for a handful of unproduced or unverified series episodes. The Subject files include a small amount of professional correspondence, a Bronze Star Medal citation, and correspondence from the 1990s regarding Kaufman's co-creation of the cartoon character "Mr. Magoo."
