Background
- Scope and content:
-
This collection contains one letter, four pages, from Billy Ray "Bill" Newman, USAF to his wife Elizabeth "Liz" Newman during the Vietnam War. The letter is from a young airman describing his flight from Travis Air Force Base to Vietnam in 1970 and giving detailed information about his arrival and processing into the base, all with an optimistic personality.
The flight took eighteen hours with stops in Hawaii, Guam, and the Philippines. He describes Hawaii briefly and then goes into detail about briefings and processing into their barracks. He met another man from Maine and he mentions some family there as they try to see if they know any mutual acquaintances. He also mentions seeing friends, including Joe Baker, "Bob", and Doug Fausz who he knew before deployment (and refers to them as if Liz knew them as well).
He ends by warning Liz that he will not be able to send tapes (audio letters) very often because of the noise in his barracks and the distance of the library where things can be recorded.
