Scope and content:

This collection contains 268 small press poetry journal issues in which Walt Phillips had his poems and drawings published between 1959 and 1999. These issues are shelved in 16 linear feet in the University Libraryโ€™s Special Collections department. The items donated by Laura Poll include 92 typewritten poems and 97 original drawings - none of which are dated. Walt Phillips gave these materials to Laura Poll and are located in boxes adjacent to the journals.

Biographical / historical:

Walt Phillips, considered a legend by many involved in the small press world, was born in Greenfield, Massachusetts. He is a former newspaper journalist, photographer, and columnist. Mr. Phillips has, since 1959, created hundreds of poems and drawings. His work has appeared in many publications, including The Massachusetts Review; Prairie Schooner; Yellow Brick Road; Pearl; Wormwood Review; and Chiron Review. He was born in Massachusetts and resided in northern California at the time of his death in 2013.
