Note:
"The Churchill is a 13-story luxury apartment on Wilshire Blvd. near Westwood Village. It was designed by William Lescaze,
architect, of New York⦠The Churchill is ell-shaped in plan, enclosing two sides of a large open courtyard southwest of
the building⦠Planting beds and tree boxes had to be carefully coordinated with the engineering structure. Tile is used
in three soft colors in a freely curved pattern which is closely integrated with the form of raised planters, pool and pool
deck. Planting⦠avoids the standard exuberant tropical character compound of exaggerated textures and contrasts, large
floppy leaves which diminish the scale of the area, startling and restless combinations of form and plants which develop little
or no structural quality. This is a more subtle and restrained planting scheme which relies a good deal on flowering shrubs
and trees. The entire coordinated pattern of this courtyard development functions in two ways: (a) as space to enter and
use at its own level; (b) as a pattern viewed from all of the floors above." â Garrett Eckbo
