Rice is the staple of life in Vietnam. Vietnamese farmers have maintained a wet-rice agricultural civilization for more than 3,000 years, growing rice in irrigated fields along the country's rivers, deltas, and seacoasts. The Vietnamese people's first name for themselves was Lac, which scholars believe means "water."
