Content/DescriptionThe Panama railroad was built across the Isthmus of Panama by William Henry Aspinwall from 1850-52. The town of Aspinwall was established in 1852 and served as its western terminus when the railroad was finished. The railroad carried many miners to California during the gold rush and was the fastest shipping route between New York and San Francisco before transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869.
