Description:
The camp was formed to construct the Bear Valley Dam (eventually Lake Wolford, 1924). Escondido was highly agricultural,
but lacked sufficient water during the dry months. To combat this problem it was decided that a dam would be built across
the Escondido Creek and water would be diverted from the San Luis Rey watershed to create a lake. While desire for a steady
water source was universal the way to make it come about was contested and the Bear Valley Dam Project began its life with
a series of lawsuits. When the project went forward it required nearly 400 workers who hammered dynamite directly into the
rock face to dam the Escondido Creek.
