Contains views of the many buildings which have formed the medical complex throughout its history, among them the original California Street structure (erected 1887); the Alexander Maternity Cottage (1892); the Little Jim Building (1895); the Eye and Ear Ward (1897); the New Main Building (1911); and many of the modern structures built in the decades following World War II. Also pictured are hospital gardens, courtyards, and the surrounding Pacific Heights district of San Francisco.

Scope and Content Note

Contains views of the expansion of the medical center during the 1950s and 1960s. Among the subjects pictured are the East Wing and East Wing addition of the Main Building; the Out Patient Research Building; the Fourth Floor addition to the Main Building; the West Wing addition; and the parking structure. Also included are several interior views of various facilities and photographic reproductions of a variety of architectural drawings related to the medical center.

Subseries 1. Nursing, ca. 1890-ca. 1975 (bulk through 1957).

Physical Description: 217 photographs; 9 promotional postcards; miscellaneous documents; 9 negatives.

Features various aspects of nursing at Children's Hospital, including the historic Training School for Nurses. Pictures student nurses, nursing classes, and various activities and events associated with the nursing school. Also included are views of the Nurses' Residence, the Tehama St. Nurses' Settlement Home, and a miscellany of individual and group portraits; a series of promotional post cards for the nursing school; a bound collection of articles, letters, memoirs, etc., primarily related to the Tehama St. Nurses' Settlement Home; and two nurses' alumnae photograph albums, which include rosters of the graduating classes of the Training School for Nurses from 1881 to 1929.

Among the notable physicians pictured are Charlotte Blake Brown, one of the founders of Children's Hospital; Adelaide Brown, the daughter of Charlotte; Florence Holsclaw; Harry Sherman; Hulda Thelander; Charles Fleischner; George T. McChesney; Edward Shaw; Clain Gelsten; Henry du Rest Phelan; and James T. Watkins. Also pictures several resident and intern physicians; surgery scenes; and the grandparents of Charlotte Blake Brown.

Scope and Content Note

Features three of the hospital's chiefs of staff and various members of its board of directors. Pictures administrators James B. Cutter, J.V. Buck, and J. Rock Toukel. Among the Board members pictured are presidents Mrs. W. Stanley Whitaker, Mrs. William A. Bentley, and Stephanie MacColl. Also pictured are various events and functions of the board, as well as other hospital staff.

Subseries 4. Miscellaneous and Unidentified Personnel, ca. 1920?-1973.

Physical Description: 316 photographs.

Additional Note

Shelving note: 2 albums (292 photographs) in AX Box 2.

Features a miscellany of hospital personnel, including staff members of the laboratory, the pharmacy, the business office, and the brace shop. Includes a snapshot album picturing a broad cross-section of Children's Hospital personnel, as well as an assortment of snapshots related to those in the album which have been sleeved and bound in a separate album.

Subseries 5. Volunteer Service, 1966.

Scope and Content Note

Features volunteers and various volunteer activities at the hospital. Many of the photographs include captions which explain various aspects of the hospital's volunteer services.

SERIES 3. PATIENT CARE

Subseries 1. Little Jim Ward, ca. 1914-ca. 1950?

Physical Description: 66 photographs.

Scope and Content Note

The Little Jim Ward, constructed in 1895, was the first of the two distinctive circular brick additions to Children's Hospital. Named after the fictitious subject of a newspaper story by San Francisco Examiner feature writer Annie Laurie - who championed the addition to the hospital - the ward originally specialized in the care of crippled children. Among the notable salutary features of the ward were a large, circular sun room and a spacious roof garden. Along with its neighboring Women's Ward (formerly the Eye and Ear Building), the Little Jim Ward was replaced in 1954 by a new wing of the Main Building.

Features many individual and group portraits of patients housed in the ward. Also pictured are the ward's roof garden and sun room, as well as a nearby outdoor playground.

Primarily features scenes of newborn infants. Several scenes picture the interior of the Alexander Maternity Cottage, which opened in 1892 as the earliest addition to the hospital.

Subseries 4. Polio Treatment, ca. 1930-ca. 1950.

Features many polio patients and two of the hospital's renowned facilities for polio treatment: the Drinker Respirator (or "iron lung") and the Hubbard Tank.

Subseries 5. Outpatient Treatment, ca. 1923-ca. 1960.

Physical Description: 16 photographs.

Scope and Content Note

This subseries pictures various aspects of the outpatient services offered by the hospital, especially dentistry. Also included are many photographs which picture waiting room scenes.

Subseries 6. Social Service, ca. 1923-ca. 1933.

Features patients, parents and hospital personnel involved in various social service activities.

Subseries 7. Miscellaneous Patient Care, ca. 1900-ca. 1975.

Physical Description: 1 album, disbound (212 photographs, 26 clippings); 93 photographs; 56 negatives.

Shelving note: Disbound album in B Box 1, Folders 2-3.

Features a miscellany of events and activities associated with patient care, picturing hospital patients, nurses, wards, rooms, and facilities. Includes a disbound album of photographs and clippings made circa 1944-1950, as well as a set of contact prints, many of which have matching negatives.

SERIES 4. EVENTS & PUBLICATION MATERIAL, ca. 1925-1983.

Physical Description: 109 photographs; 121 negatives.

Additional Note

Shelving note: 6 photographs in AX Box 1, Folders 12-16.

Features a miscellany of events associated with the hospital, such as groundbreaking ceremonies, civic exhibits, dedications, employee service award ceremonies, celebrity visits, the Children's Hospital Handicap horse race, and various activities of the Children's Hospital Auxiliary. Among the individuals pictured are John Wayne, Bob Hope, Jerry Lewis, Telly Savalas, Joe E. Brown, San Francisco Mayor George Christopher, San Quentin Prison Warden H.O. Teets, and various hospital board members and staff. The series is roughly arranged by event.

The series also includes various prints, negatives and transparencies used in preparing the booklet "The Story of Children's Hospital," published circa 1973. These items were originally grouped together in an envelope labeled "'Story of Children's Hospital' photos." Other items throughout the collection were also likely used in the preparation of this publication.
