SERIES 3: PROFESSIONAL RESEARCH PROJECTS AND CONSULTANT WORK, (1927-1977), 1839-1981.

Physical Description: Cartons 10-32; oversize box 1, folders 3-8; oversize folders 1, 5, 6, 8

Scope and Contents

Divided into sub-series by name of granting agency or employer and research subject; parenthetical dates reflect duration projects, followed by date span for materials. Most projects continued for several years and often involved more than one organization. Following Taylor's notes for the arrangement of his research, related or continuing projects concerning migrant workers in the 1930s and early 1940s, and those concerning the Central Valley in the 1940-1950s have been combined to present a more unified picture. The first, Social Science Research Council, contains research materials used for a series of monographs published as Mexican Labor in the United States, and is further divided into Research Material (including field notes) and Related Material. Research Material is arranged by state in chronological order determined by the date when research first began; within states, arrangement is alphabetical by city, county, or area. Includes hand written field notes, as well as, a complete set of typescript field notes by Taylor and his researchers. Research was concentrated in California, Chicago, and Texas, and includes material on the steel and railroad industries. Material for other projects is divided into Administrative Files, which include correspondence, reports, and minutes of meetings, and Project Files, which contain field notes; subject, people or area files; background, research, and related material.

SERIES 5: GENERAL RESEARCH FILES, 1660-1983 (bulk 1900s-1983).

Physical Description: Cartons 38-84; boxes 20-21; oversize v. 1-2; oversize folders 2-3, 7-8

Scope and Contents

Water and Land Policy is further divided into two sub-series: Subject Files and People Files. Subject Files (arranged alphabetically) include significant information on many major topics, as well as documentation of subjects on the periphery of land and water issues, particularly as they relate to California. Major subjects included are California, History of Water Campaigns, Legislation (both U.S. and California), 160 Acre Irrigation Limitation, Excess Land Laws, Power, and Projects. People Files (arranged alphabetically) include clippings, print materials, and correspondence when noted; within each subject or people file, materials are arranged hierarchically, beginning with correspondence, followed by Paul Taylor's notes, and then print materials.
Oakland Federal Writer's Project consists of bibliographies and articles collected as background information by Taylor to support his teaching. Articles included in Subject Files are arranged alphabetically by title, and accompanied by citations relating to agricultural labor and related topics as gathered by Dr. Taylor. The citations form part of the card files included in the sub-series, Miscellaneous, which has been further divided into six sub-subseries: Research Notes and Ideas, Card Files, Maps, Newsletters, Scrapbooks, and Clippings. A wealth of research data, presented in various formats, consists of material collected by Taylor and his students. One noted section of the Card Files are projects Taylor assigned to his students in 1945-1947, which include newspaper and periodical citations on many agricultural topics focusing on California history and issues. Maps collected, and sometimes annotated, by Taylor reflect his interest in California migrant labor in the 1930s, as well as international travel related to agricultural issues in the 1960s. Newsletters and Scrapbooks are dedicated to various labor issues of the 1930s and 1940s, while Clippings include a chronological category illustrating the history of agricultural labor and sociological trends in the agricultural community, followed (alphabetically) by major subjects, including Agricultural Labor, Central Valley Project, and Water Policy in California.

Arrangement

Divided into four sub-series: Agriculture and Labor, Water and Land Policy, Oakland Federal Writer's Project, and Miscellaneous. Agriculture and Labor is further divided into seven sub-subseries: Agribusiness and Corporate Agriculture, Subject Files, Area Files, Labor Unions, Farmer and Grower Organizations, Miscellaneous Publications, and Notes and Excerpts from Newspapers and Documents.
