Series I.  Occidental College, 1935-1957

Physical Description: 8.5 linear feet [13 boxes]

Scope and Content Note

This series comprises materials created during Dumke's years as a student, professor, and administrator at Occidental College (1935-1957). This series contains documents and correspondence relating to his historical research, handwritten research note cards publications, student class notes, instructor’s class notes and syllabi, and all administrative materials related to his tenure as Dean of Faculty at the college. Notable materials from this series include edited first and second drafts of the books, The Boom of the Eighties in Southern California (1944), Mexican Gold Trail: The Journal of a Forty-Niner (1945), and A History of the Pacific Area in Modern Times (1949). Materials relating to Dumke’s association and activities on behalf of the Republican Party in the 1940s and 1950s are also included. Perhaps some of the most important materials held here are most of the personal letters between Dumke, his wife, and his family. The first series contains administrative materials documenting the accessioning, processing, arrangement, and finding aid, for the collection. Included in this series are transcripts of a 1984 oral interview with Dr. Dumke, general biographical material created about Dumke, and a photocopy of his obituary.
