One mile S. of Chittenden; lake made by a fall that washed out of valley of old fault
Fremont Bldg. for Claus Spreckels; S. W. corner Fremont and Market Sts., Jan. [January] 15, 1908. Pete driving - bluish mud at top; begins to drive hard the last 6 ft. 40 ft. lengths - 12" drain, butt, 8" diam. top - Brought up solidly at 40 ft. depth, probably on hard pan. Designed for 20 tons per pile. Piles at Market St. between Spear and Stuart [Steuart], 40 ft. Long, were loaded to 50 tons without appeciable settlement by test load.
No. 1 Fremont Street, east side, beginning 137 ft. south of Market; walls settled and basement floor forced up during earthquake. As here shown, walls have been removed above concrete work, leaving earthquake effects exposed. We are driving piles in lot next, northward, and find they drive very easily to depth of 38 to 42 ft. +-, thus showing the softness of foundation. W. L. Huber, Jan. 23, 1908.
