Correspondence by name or topic, Series IV.B. 1919-1988, undated

Physical Description: 5.42 Linear Feet(13 boxes)

Scope and Contents note

This subseries contains business correspondence with private collectors, museum curators, art dealers, and shipping companies. The letters sent are carbon copies. Occasionally included are invoices, checks, lists of artworks, notes, and photographs.
Among private art collectors, the most extensive correspondence is with the playwright Guy Bolton; Charlotte Berend-Corinth, artist in the Berliner Secession and wife of the artist Lovis Corinth; the biochemist Heinz Fraenkel-Conrat; Sigismund Graf Raczynski; Anthony and Gladys Reyre; the psychoanalyst Richard Sterba; Hugo Stokvis; Antonie and Jessie Vroeg; and Konrad Wallfisch [Conrad Wall].
Also extensive is the correspondence with the art dealers Gimpel Brothers, Walter Andreas Hofer, D. Katz, Kurt Meissner, and Eugene Slatter; and with the auction houses Christie's and Sotheby Parke Bernet in London and New York.
There are exchanges or letters received from several well known art historians, including Ludwig Burchard, Kurt Bauch, Michael Baxandall, Otto Benesch, Bernhart Degenhart, Max Jakob Friedländer, Ludwig Grote, Erwin Panofsky, Seymour Slive, and Erica Tietze.
Also present are Kate Schaeffer's correspondence with Hanns Schaeffer and other family members; Hanns Schaeffer's correspondence with the lawyer Hans Franzen in Wiesbaden concerning postwar restitution; and Hanns Schaeffer's autobiographical records from the time before World War II.
Filed with this subseries are a few topical groups, such as the gallery's correspondence regarding advertising for the gallery; correspondence concerning the Schaeffer Galleries anniversary publication of 1961; and carbon copies of letters sent to various clients in 1945 acknowledging the return of original certificates of authenticity. The file titled Kennedy gift contains correspondence with the White House regarding a portrait painting of Benjamin Franklin, given by the Schaeffer Galleries to the White House as a gift in memory of John F. Kennedy.
