Scope and Content Note

This subseries consists predominantly of photographs and illustrated matter, with some notes and letters. Arranged alphabetically by artist, except for items filed in box 138 which contains illustrations of artworks by unidentified artists. Some of the topical groups filed in this category are artworks by various Antwerp masters, 17th century Flemish portraits, Flemish drawings, and a group originally labelled by Held as Albertina engravings. Illustrations of artworks by unidentified artists from Brugges and Ghent are filed alphabetically under Brugges and Ghent. Artists identified only by the first letter of their name are filed at the end of the alphabetic sequence to which they belong.
The majority of the artists are 16th and 17th century Dutch and Flemish masters. German artists are also represented, mainly Albrecht Dürer, Albrecht Altdorfer, and Lucas Cranach the Elder. There is two large groups labelled by Held as German School, and Flemish School.
Most extensively represented are Johannes Boekhorst, Ferdinand Bol, Hieronimus Bosch, Dieric Bouts, Crispin van den Broeck, the four Bruegels, Joos van Cleve, Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen, Gaspar de Crayer, Abraham van Diepenbeeck, Frans Floris and his followers, Hugo van der Goes, Hendrick Golzius, Jan Gossaert, Jan Sanders van Hemessen, Jan van den Hoecke, Abraham Janssens, Lucas van Lyden, Master of Frankfurt, Quentin Metsys, Erasmus Quellinus, Anthonis Sallaert, Cornelis Schut, David Teniers the Younger, Theodoor van Thulden, Dirck Jacobsz. Vellert, Pieter Crynse Volmaryn, Marten de Vos (1576-1613), and Artus Wolfert.
