Series I.A. Photographs and treatment notes 1927-1979

General Physical Description note: 57 linear feet 99 boxes

Scope and Content Note

The treatment photographs are organized alphabetically by national school and artist name. In cases of artists represented by several works, the files are organized by painting subject. The number of photos for each artist are noted following the name. No number following a name indicates that there is a treatment report only. If a painting is represented by more than three views, the title is provided in the finding aid as well as the name of the owner. Owner information for works owned by commercial galleries if currentm for the time of conservation. Paintings located in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection in Lugano at the time of conservation are now in Madrid, Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza. Some owners active in the art trade are indicated only by an initial, "R and S" for Rosenberg and Stiebel, "H." for Rudolf J. Heinemann (who owned the Pinakos Gallery), "K" for Knoedler, "M" for Mont (formerly A. F. Mondschein), and "N" for Newhouse. Each national school section has a folder of treatment reports for paintings not represented by, or not matched to, photographs. In cases in which painting titles were not provided for photos and no treatment report accompanies the photos, it was not generally possible to determine if there is a corresponding treatment report in the treatment report file. Most of Suhr's negatives and photographs were made by Mr. Gray, of "Gray, Photographer," whose studio was located at 39 W. 67th. St., New York. The photographs are primarily Black and White. Research photos (photos that Suhr used for reference) are mainly interfiled into the Paintings Core Collection of the Photo Study Collection at the Getty Research Institute, but some research photos may reside in Series I. This series also includes occasional correspondence with discussion of treatment.

Scope and Content Note

This series contains documentation of Suhr's business and professional activities. It is organized in five sections, Series II.A. Financial and Business Papers, Series II.B. Correspondence, Series II.C. Professional Activities, Series II.D. Printed Matter, Series II.E. Photographs, slides, negatives, film reel, audio tape.

General Physical Description note: 1.5 linear feet 6 boxes

Scope and Content Note

Series II.A. includes Suhr's account ledgers, goods received receipts, address book, date books, photograph logs, records of Suhr's conservation work for the Kennedy Galleries, photographs of Suhr and persons he knew through his profession (and slides and negatives), and miscellaneous conservation notes. The account ledgers provide the date, owner, artist, painting title, brief statement of the work performed, fee and date returned. The goods received receipts contain the date received, owner, artist, title, and signature of the owner. The date books record appointments, phone calls, trips, etc. The photograph logs record photography done by Mr. Gray, of "Gray Photographer," of paintings that Suhr worked on. Suhr provided specific guidelines to Gray for the photography. Gray's studio was located at 39 W. 67th St., New York. The memorandi from the Kennedy Galleries, a dealer specializing in American paintings, prints and drawings, document each work sent to Suhr for conservation, stating the artist, title, medium, and dimensions of the works, and occasionally specifying the work requested.
