Photographic documentation, Series I. 1894-1964

General Physical Description note: 67.6 linear feet (182 boxes)

Scope and Contents note

The photographs in the Carlhian archive primarily document objects and furniture acquired, produced by the firm, or on loan to the firm, as well as interior decorations made by the firm. The photographic prints, made by the firm, are described in livres de clichés photographiques or photography registers, of which 12 exist. They are reproduced in postage stamp size in livres de mignonnettes, which facilitated their consultation. The early history of the firm is traced in four albums that document prestigious commissions that Carlhian & Beaumetz received from the Duveen Brothers in London. Complementary photographic documentation comprises photographs related to specific commissions or used for reference, such as residences, interior decorations of historical monuments, objects and furniture in museums.

Arrangement note

Arranged in five subseries: Series I.A. Photographs, 1909-1964, undated; Series I.B. Livres de clichés photographiques, 1909-1964, undated; Series I.C. Mignonnettes, circa 1907-1952, undated; Series I.D. Duveen albums, 1894-1906, undated; Series I.E. Complementary photographic documentation, undated.

Photographs, Series I.A. 1909-1964

General Physical Description note: 30 linear feet (137 boxes)

Scope and Contents note

14,000 photographs document objects on loan or acquired by the firm, either copies or genuine antiques, and interior decorations produced by the firm. The same piece of furniture could be photographed several times, testifying to restorations, new upholstery and other modifications. Of the existing photographic documentation, approximately 10,000 are prints, of which the firm retained the negatives, while approximately 4,000 are prints of glass negatives that were lost or considered no longer usable. The latter prints are stamped on verso: "Cette épreuve tenant lieu du cliché détruit, ne doit pas sortir de la maison."

Arrangement note

The photographic prints are numbered according to two numbering sequences: CA 1 to CA 515 (i.e. clichés anciens); and 1 to 14,356. The latter are referred to as clichés nouveaux or CN in stock books. This was due to the change of the in-house photographer, who did not pursue the numbering sequence of his predecessor. The letters CA were then added before the numbers of the earlier photographs.
Negative numbers 5025-5499 were never assigned, as the series number was abandoned, resuming again with negative 5500. Likewise, the negative numbers stop at 6099 and resume again at 7100.

Stock books, Series II. 1901-1975

General Physical Description note: 118.92 linear feet (72 boxes)

Scope and Contents note

The stock books are of three kinds: antique furniture and objects ("stock ancien"), modern objects or furniture (the "stock moderne"), fabrics or "soft goods" (the "stock mou"). The stock books register the furniture, art objects, samples that were acquired, sold, or placed on consignment. Entries in the stock books list the provenance of the object, its price at the time of the acquisition, as well as restorations, and often a photograph cut out from a mignonnette plate. For each new stock book, objects and furniture still in stock were registered first, followed by new acquisitions. This enabled Carlhian staff to use only one stock book at any particular time. The following code: PRUDENTIAM (1234567890), with the letter Z repeating the preceding letter, has been used to record prices.

Arrangement note

Arranged in five subseries: Series II.A. Antique furniture and objects ("stock ancien"); Series II.B. Furniture and objects "à condition" and stock "W"; Series II.C. "Stock moderne;" Series II.D. Fabrics or "soft goods" (the "stock mou"); Series II.E. Fabric samples "à condition;" Series II.F. Other registers.

The archive comprises four address books for clients, including one for clients that had debts ("Livre noir" mauvais payeurs, before 1925).

Correspondence, Series VI. 1887-1980

General Physical Description note: 90.49 linear feet (217 boxes)

Scope and Contents note

The correspondence between the Carlhian firm and its clients gives a good overview of the firm's daily activities as well as its general administration. It is primarily comprised of letters received, however, there remain in the archive copy registers of letters sent, and numerous copies were retained in client files for the period under Robert and Michel's management. The firm's estimates, signed by clients, were filed separately by the Carlhians and are described in Series VI.C.

Arrangement note

Arranged in three subseries: Series VI.A. General correspondence; Series VI.B. Copies of letters sent; Series VI.C. Signed estimates.

General correspondence, Series VI.A. 1905-1977

General Physical Description note: 59.63 linear feet (143 boxes)

Scope and Contents note

The series is primarily comprised of correspondence between the Carlhian firm and its clients, which included the Rothschilds, Duveen Brothers, diplomatic services, banks, hotels, and firms of luxurious goods, such as the Maison Guerlain and Cartier. The series comprises topical files such as Inventaires, Stocks, and Tarifs, according to the firm's labels. There is some correspondence with American clients in this series, such as Hamilton Rice (1932), but the bulk of the files related to the Hamilton Rice and the Wideners are in the correspondence files of Carlhian of Paris (Series VII).

Arrangement note

The correspondence is filed by year of correspondence, and then alphabetically under clients' names. When a commission evolved over several years, the correspondence was filed in the main year of activity for the commission. The firm's filing order, at times indiosyncratic, has been retained. A diplomatic service may be filed in one instance under the name of the country, i.e. Ethiopia or Iran, which may suggest that several entities are concerned in that file (Légation d'Iran in Paris and Embassy of Iran in Washington D.C.). In other instances, the diplomatic entity is filed under A, i.e. Ambassade des États-Unis (Paris) or Ambassade de France (Washington D.C.).

1953-1977

Scope and Contents note

Carlhian filed the correspondence for the years 1953-1977 in two sections, presumably reflecting the distinction established between the business activities of André Carlhian, and his two sons Robert and Michel. The first section labelled Carlhian S.A.R.L. primarily concerns the correspondence of André Carlhian, while the second is labelled R. & M. Carlhian, the firm created in 1953 by Robert and Michel. The former contains files dated through 1967, the year that André Carlhian died.
