Additional information included inside the pl enclosure: correspondence dated 11/2/59 from John to Theo. "Thank you for your note of 30 October and for letting me see the enclosed pictures. 3.7542p is clearly the Pacific Mail S.S. Co. steamer CITY OF PEKING (the name is visible on the lifeboats), and I assume that it was taken when she was in dry dock at Hunter's Point. It shows her with the small stacks which she carried in her later years. The ship was re-boilered in 1887, and I have always assumed that these small stack were fitted then, but I cannot be sure of this. I suppose that 3.7543p shows the screw and rudder of the CITY OF PEKING, taken at the same time as the other picture, but I have no way of proving this.
