Research Files 1916-1969

Scope and Content

This series includes newspaper and magazine clippings, publicity materials, publications, notes, and scrapbooks that Henry used in producing his columns for the Los Angeles Times, his radio news broadcasts, his book on the history of the Olympics, and other journalistic activities.

Arrangement

This series contains two sub-series: 1. Subject Files, and 2. An Approved History of the Olympic Games. Additionally, materials from sections previously identified by Occidental librarians as "Pamphlets, Misc.," and "Reference Sources" were brought into this series and arranged thematically.

Subject Files Bulk, 1945-1960 1916-1968

Arrangement

Materials were organized into four alphabetically arranged sections by Occidental College librarians in the 1970s: 1. Miscellaneous Information, 2. People, 3. Places, 4. Newspaper Clippings. These sections have been brought together sequentially to form this sub-series, and remain in their existing order. Several files at the end of this sub-series are stored separately (box 57) due to evidence of mold.

Processing Information note

While efforts were made to keep materials in their original files, much of Henry's research materials were stored in mailing envelopes. These were discarded in favor of folders in the interest user access. Envelopes that feature significant notation or other unique characteristics were kept with the files.

Scope and Contents

Research files on a wide range of subjects (including aviation, automobiles, British royalty, and Hollywood), political and popular culture figures (such as Walt Disney, Richard Nixon, and Bob Hope), U.S. states, and foreign countries. Material is primarily comprised of newspaper and magazine clippings, but also includes press releases, brochures, article drafts, photographs, and correspondence.
