Series VII. Financial and administrative files, 1964-1995, bulk 1975-1989, undated

Physical Description: 15.4 Linear Feet (30 boxes, 2 flatfile folders)

Scope and Content Note

Series VII comprises financial and administrative files between 1964 and 1995. The files are both personal and professional and trace the evolution of The Robert Mapplethorpe Studio at 24 Bond Street from a place where Mapplethorpe lived and worked from 1972 to 1981, to a space he used exclusively as a studio in 1981, to the office of Mapplethorpe's fully incorporated business in 1984. Mapplethorpe continued to conduct much of his personal business through the studio even after he was no longer living at 24 Bond Street, and as a result, the personal and professional documents are intertwined. Included are financial and administrative records relating to general studio operations, the sale and loan of his work, the purchase of art for his personal collection, fellowship applications, and legal and incorporation documents.

Arrangement

This series is arranged alphabetically by administrative function. The files are in chronological order within the functional categories. Miscellaneous materials are filed at the end.
