Abstract:
Contains mostly ephemera of a Japanese American family from their time living at the War Relocation Center in Poston, Arizona.
Materials include correspondence, a Buddhist prayer book and program, 3 baggage tags bearing their assigned family number
(#4202), travel passes, blank forms in Japanese and English, and other miscellany. Also includes five group photographs of
Japanese American teenagers at the camp (b&w, 5x7). One photograph is of a girl's volleyball team and one depicts a boy's
chess club. Also includes an autograph book belonging to, Kazumi "Chi" Yamada, signed by various persons at the camp. Kazumi
"Chi" Yamada, eldest son of Sosuke Yamada, was offered early release from the camp if he went to Chicago, which he did so
on May 24,1944.

Sosuke Yamada (born August 15, 1878, Miye-ken, Japan; died September 6, 1973, San Diego County, California) was a Japanese
American farmer from Chula Vista, California. The Yamada family, which included Sosuke, his wife Kakue (neé Kawamura), and
their five children, Kazumi, Yuriko Cherry, George, Henry, and So, entered the War Relocation Center in Poston, Arizona on
August 27, 1942 and were assigned family #4202. Sosuke, Kakue, and So were released on August 27, 1945. The other children
were released in 1944 and early 1945 to the Chicago, Illinois area.
