Abstract:

The contents of this collection includes 70 handwritten letters written by Edward "Bud" C. Wert (US Navy) during training to serve with the Pacific Fleet between 1944 and 1946. Forty-nine letters are written while studying at the Communications School at the Amphibious Training Base in Oceanside, California between February 1944 and April 1944. A gap in correspondence occurs from April 1944 and December 1945. Correspondence resumes with ten letters written between December 1945 and mid-January 1946 from the U.S. Naval Receiving Station in Shoemaker, California. A letter in mid-January, 1946 reveals the anticipation of another "tour of duty." This tour of duty is located in the Federal Office Building in San Francisco. The remaining letters are written from San Francisco. All of "Bud's" letters are addressed to the Wert family address in Cincinnati, Ohio, although to different first names. The salutation is consistently "Dear Folks."
These letters give insight to the first and second impressions of a young man from Ohio during the first and latter days of training with the Navy in California during World War II. There are comparisons of life in California to things familiar in Cincinnati. Appreciation of Mom's fried-chicken is mentioned several times. Bud also asks about family members, shares information about money spent and received, requests to hear "gossip" and comments about the weather. Bud's experiences at the new locations are shared as he prepares for and waits to be called into action.
Miscellaneous correspondence includes letters from friend Ed Sullivan ("Sully") to Bud's sister Edith , from friend Earl Frey to Bud's brother Robert and from Bud's brother Robert, who is serving with the Army in Germany, to the "Folks" in Cincinnati, Ohio.
