William H. Reicks commemorative scrapbook, 1915-1930

Abstract:

Commemorative scrapbook from approximately 1963 relating to the life and career of San Joaquin County sheriff William H. Reicks. Consists mostly of clippings related to criminal cases and investigations in the San Joaquin Valley of California, clippings relating to Reick's various sheriff election campaigns, a small number of photographs (some of Reicks and a few of the interior of the San Joaquin County jail's "tank for sentenced prisoners," "dungeon tank," and "female quarters"). Includes coverage of cases like the 1916 murders of Game Warden Raymond Heacock and Game Warden Richard Squire who were shot while in their patrol boat near Bouldin Island in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The scrapbook includes Riecks' personal copies of the suspects' mugshots in this case. On the first page of the scrapbook the following is written: "Given to Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Giannini by Sally Reicks, after the death of William H. Reicks as a memory of him [sic] of a wonderful neighbor and friend."

William H. Riecks served as sheriff of San Joaquin County, California from 1915 to 1930. Throughout Riecks' tenure, the county of San Joaquin saw a succession of dramatic changes, including with the introduction of the automobile and a great boom in population. In 1927 he swore in San Joaquin's first female deputy, "Dead Eye" Annie Delaney. A strong supporter of Prohibition policies, Riecks made a name for himself as being a particularly ruthless enforcer of anti-alcohol laws.
