W.P. Tilden letters: Stockton, Calif., to Maria French, Orange, Mass., 1862-1863

Creator/Contributor:

Tilden, William P. (William Peregrine), -1873, creator, correspondent.

Creator/Contributor:

French, Maria, correspondent.

Abstract:

Two handwritten letters from the resident physician at the state insane asylum in California to the sister of an inmate named Levi [French?]. One letter (4 p. ; Feb. 27, 1862) assures French that her brother is doing well and he is doing everything possible to help him. Tilden is encouraging Levit to write and there is an added note at the top of the letter referencing an enclosed letter with address from Levi [the letter from Levis is not enclosed in this collection]. The second letter (3 p. ; Mar. 24, 1863), with the original mailing envelope, reports further news on Levi's "insanity" including a visit from a friend that seemed to enliven him. Also includes an unsigned scrap of notepaper, possibly a remnant of the letter written by Levi, " ... you had better not pay the postage on your letters that you send to me, for I do not think I get half of them."
