[Winton and Isle Turner photograph album]

Abstract:

Chiefly snapshots documenting the early years of the marriage of Winton S. Turner, an African American soldier stationed in Germany, and Ilse Krings, a German shop manager from Frankfurt. Images depict everyday family and social life of the Turners -- including Karl, Ilse's son from a previous relationship -- in Germany; the Turners' 1964 wedding in Frankfurt; Karl's confirmation; travels in Germany, Canada and California; and their home life in Alameda after relocating to California in 1966. Also includes a few studio portraits of Winton, and some photographs of Ilse prior to her relationship with Winton, dating to the mid-1930s. Album also includes a November 1964 letter from Ilse to Winton pertaining to their second loss of a child. Other items include a letter from Ilse to Winton, and a related bill and letter from U.S. Army medical services, pertaining to the earlier loss of a child in March 1964 (PIC folder 2); and a book of "Dixieland" postcards from the early 20th century addressed to Bruce Berford of Churchville, Pennsylvania and other miscellaneous papers (PIC folder 3).
