William Roth was born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1942. As a child Roth was diagnosed with the neuromuscular disorder, dystonia. In 1963 he received his Bachelor of Arts from Yale University, and in 1970 he attained his Ph. D. in Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley. While at Berkeley Roth became involved in the opposition to the Vietnam War. After a few years teaching at Dartmouth College and the University of Vermont Roth served on the Carnegie Council on Children. His activism and research turned to disability rights. In 1978 he began to teach at the University at Albany, Stare University of New York, and in 1984 he became the Founding Director of the Center for Computing and Disability. Roth died in 2014.
