William James Bouwsma (November 22, 1923, Ann Arbor, Michigan - March 2, 2004, Berkeley, California) was an American scholar and historian of the European Renaissance. He was Sather Professor of History Emeritus at the University of California Berkeley and president of the American Historical Association (AHA) in 1978. He received his doctorate from Harvard University in 1950 and taught at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana until 1957 when he accepted a position in the History Department at U.C. Berkeley serving as chairman from 1966-1967 and 1981-1983. Bouwsma's area of expertise was the history of European culture in the early modern period, with a special interest in Renaissance Studies
