Abstract:

Chiefly contains letters from Wallace G. Macgregor to his family in East Braintree, Massachusetts, concerning his activities as a chemist, working first in the gold mines of Big Bug, Arizona, and later traveling as a consultant to mines in Nevada and other places. Macgregor's letters also include detailed descriptions of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire, and mention the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition. Later letters also include notes written by Lucy and their children. Also includes Wallace Macgregor's diaries for 1896 and 1902, plus a family genealogy, a few blueprints, and miscellaneous printed material concerning mining.

Wallace Macgregor was born on January 8, 1867 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. On July 16, 1891, he was married to Lucy Wyman Gibbs (born January 28, 1866 in Chelsea, Massachusetts) in Braintree, Massachusetts. They moved to California, where Macgregor worked as a mining engineer, eventually settling in Berkeley, California. They had two children, Wallace Gibbs Macgregor (1893-1983) and Alice Macgregor Edson (1897-1970).
