Abstract:

Include correspondence, legal documents, accounts, speeches, and newspaper clippings. Correspondence includes letters between his stagecoach company and the Postmaster General regarding mail routes in San Benito county and letters dealing with cases and politics. Legal documents include work done on cases for seamen complaints against shipping companies, railroads, and land disputes. Speeches discuss the American Flag, Local Option Law, Temperance, and the U.S. Centennial.
Include correspondence, legal documents, scrapbooks, and photographs. Also includes wife Nancy Dinsmore Bixby Lovett's diary, a short story, biography and genealogy on William Edward Lovett and family research notes about Lovett.

William Edward Lovett, a native of Beverly, Mass., was born Oct. 3, 1823. He was a cabin boy, a lawyer, a California State Senator from Monterey and San Benito counties, a Calif. gubernatorial candidate, Indian agent, Asst. U.S. Attorney General. He also co-owned a stage coach company and was active in the Temperance Movement. Before coming to Calif. in 1849 he spent many years in Mazatlan, Mexico where he became fluent in Spanish. William Edward Lovett died in 1883.
