Herman Livezey-Whitman collection

Creator/Contributor:

Whitman, Walt, 1819-1892, creator

Creator/Contributor:

Livezey, Herman, 1892-1947, former owner.

Abstract:

The bulk of items are literary manuscripts in the form of fragmentary working notes for Whitman's Specimen days & collect. Also includes correspondence or fragments of correspondence, miscellaneous notes, other papers related to his work, and a self-fashioned notebook containing brief entries made on a trip to Kansas and Colorado in 1879 (WW 47, folder 82). The only poem present is "Wood odors" (WW 3, folder 6), although some have argued it is not a poem but rather a compilation of phrases for use elsewhere. One ALS from Whitman to David Lezinsky in Berkeley, Calif. (Nov. 30, 1890) and a page of notes on Walter Scott, probably for Whitman's Backward glance o'er travel'd roads, were apparently added from another source (folders 122-123). Six printed facsimiles (made in 1913 by Traunel and Boni) are also included, from a different source (folder 124)
