Born and raised in Southern California, William C. Gordon was the son of William L. and Anna Gordon. He attended Whittier High School and then the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied English and served as student body president. After serving in the military, Gordon returned to the Bay Area, where he studied law at the Hastings College of Law. His law practice, which lasted from 1965 until 2002, focused on representing men and women who had been injured on the job. After retiring from his legal career, Gordon began to write novels. His first novel "Flawed" was not in the mystery genre but his subsequent novels reflect a turn towards detective fiction. Gordon's San Francisco-set novels feature protagonist Samuel Hamilton. Gordon was married to writer Isabel Allende for 27 years.
