Contains business and family correspondence. Business correspondence includes letters from John Conness and Adolphus W. Greely
and receipts to A. Cohn & Co. Family letters prior to 1859 describe his work installing telegraph lines for the railroad in
the Midwest, and life in Lansing, Michigan. Later family letters relate experiences on overland journeys to California from
St. Joseph, 1859, with comments on the Pike's Peak hoax, Salt Lake City, Brigham Young, Mormonism and polygamy; arrival in
San Francisco at the time of the Broderick-Terry duel; work for H.H. and A.L. Bancroft; acquaintance with Thomas Starr King,
William A. Scott, John Swett and others; the 1868 earthquake; and ventures into politics. Also includes clippings and ephemera.
