Abstract:

Diaries, letters, wills, and ephemera belonging to 3 generations of the McClure family. The 2 diaries belong to William D. McClure: the first, 1850, describes his journey from Ohio to California to prospect for gold. Letters to his mother, Jane Ferguson McClure from this period discuss prices in California and its unsettled conditions regarding horse thieves and gamblers. The second diary, 1862-1863, describes his service as a private in the Civil War. Letters from William D. home to his wife, Jane Wasson McClure, while serving in Co. G, Ohio Infantry, 20th Regiment include a remarkable range of topics, such as food, sermons, black conscription, marches, casualties, and the siege of Vicksburg. There is also a drawing by William D. of the encampment at Vicksburg, 1863. Jane McClure's replies to her husband, 1862-1863, describe her daily chores, finances, family relationships, attitudes concerning wounded soldiers returning home, and a program given by Artemus Ward (letter dated April 15, 1863). Later letters during the 1880s describe William D.'s move to California to begin a produce farm.
