California Volunteers during the American Civil War. Includes invoices for clothing, camp and garrison equipage for the Company
while stationed at Camp Alert (1861-1862), Camp Drum (1862), Camp Latham (1862), Camp Independence (1862), Fort Yuma (1862),
and Camp Babbitt (1862-1863). The majority of the correspondence deals with Jones' attempts to clear his military record following
his dishonorable discharge in 1864.

William Jones was born in New York in 1817. He emigrated to California in 1850 and was commissioned as a Captain in command
of Company I, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, California Volunteers on November 4, 1861. During the Civil War he was stationed at Camp
Alert (San Francisco), Camp Drum (Los Angeles), Camp Latham (Culver City), Camp Independence (Owens River Valley), and at
Camp Babbitt (Visalia). Jones was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on February 2, 1863 and to Colonel on October 23, 1863, but
he was accused of improperly trading away government horses and his commission was revoked January 2, 1864. He was dishonorably
discharged by the Military Board on August 5, 1864. Subsequently he returned to Placerville, California to try his hand at
mining before turning to politics. He served a term as Mayor of Placerville and was the Republican candidate for Lieutenant
Governor in 1867. In 1873 and 1875 he was candidate for State Senator and Assemblyman, respectively. At the time of his sudden
death on September 6, 1877, Jones was the Republican nominee for Assemblyman from El Dorado County.
Company I, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, California Volunteers was organized at Camp Alert (San Francisco). It was sent first to Camp
Drum (Los Angeles), where it was stationed during January 1862, and at Camp Latham (present day Culver City) in February 1862.
From June to October 1862, the Company took part in the Owens River Expedition from Camp Independence, returning to Camp Drum
in October 1862 before moving to Camp Babbitt, near Visalia, where it remained until January 1864. It then marched to Benicia
Barracks, where it was stationed from March to May. It moved in June 1864, to Camp Bidwell, near Chico, California, where
it remained. The terms of most of the original members expired in September 1864 and they were discharged in San Francisco
from October 1 to October 7, 1864.
